Typhoon batters Philippines

MANILA 04 December – The strongest typhoon to hit the Philippines this year stranded thousands of ferry passengers as their vessels were ordered to remain in port. However, with the exception of two groundings, shipping emerged relatively unscathed. Typhoon Durian struck Bicol and other regions on Thursday and Friday, causing rock and mudslides that left more than 400 people dead, 500 injured and 600 missing, according to the latest estimates. The Philippine Coast Guard said two domestic cargo ships, the Grand Roro and the Delta 7, were grounded but there were no injuries to crews. About 3,000 passengers were stranded in Tabaco and Matnog ports in the Albay region, and passengers held at terminals in Batangas and Calapan were only allowed to board and sail at the weekend. About 5,000 ferry passengers who had been unable to leave Manila were allowed to leave when it became clear that the typhoon would miss the capital. Durian strengthened on Sunday as it moves across the South China Sea and was expected to bring high winds and heavy rains to south-central Vietnam today and tomorrow. Landfall was anticipated in the coastal provinces of Khanh Hoa and Ninh Thuan, with gusts of about 130km per hour out at sea and 7m seas.
