Izar yard sale approved
MADRID 03 November – Spain’s council of ministers today approved the sale of three former Izar yards, thereby allowing the owners of the yards at Gijon, Sestao and Seville to start bidding for new orders. The approval comes after Sepi, the state industrial holdings company, and shipyard union representatives signed a labour agreement over job guarantees late yesterday. The new labour agreement provides yard workers with employment guarantees over a ten-year period and early retirement for workers aged over 52 years of age. Unions today heralded the agreement as a breakthrough in the shipyard sale process, saying the labour agreement ensures employment and the maintenance of shipbuilding activity in Spain. In a separate agreement, the successful bidders – CNN (Sestao), Astilleros de Huelva (Seville) and Factoria Vulcano (Gijon) – have agreed to union demands to create a consortium that would enable yards to make use of commercial and workforce synergy. The yards at Seville and Gijon will now be called Astilleros de Sevilla and Factoria Juliana respectively. Sepi announced the winning bids for the three yards in July, but approval for the sale of engine maker Manises was postponed following a European Commission probe into an alleged state subsidy.
